Solar CHILL Evoprative Cooler

Evaporative cooling uses a system of air flow called the Fresh-Air-Draw-System.  In this system, new air, which is brought in from outside the house or building, is taken in through the cooler, where it is cooled, released into the building, and then re-released, upon completing the cycle, back outside through open windows or doors. This type of air circulation differs from traditional Air Conditioning (air condenser).  AC units use what is called a RE-Circulation Air System. This system recycles the same inside air and, unlike the the Fresh-Air-Draw-System, works best if it is sealed off from all outside air leakages and exchange.

The fresh air draw system, used by all evaporative coolers, is beneficial as compared to the RE-Circulation of the AC units, because Evaporative Coolers allow a flush-out of indoor environmental air-impurities; while AC units will continue to re-use the same polluted air, often causing problems in the air quality.

Please see the diagram below to discover how the Fresh-Air-Draw-System works.  Again, this system is uesed by the SOLAR CHILL Evaporative Coolers and all other traditional evaporative cooling systems.

Please also note, in order for this system to work in the most effective way, there must be openings that allow the cooled air to escape, which then allows new air to come in. If this "release" is restricted or not permitted, the system will become pressurized and not work at its optimum level.

Through the use of the SOLAR CHILL Evaporative Coolers, and the fresh air system, this diagram demonstrates how the cooling system may be operated with out the use of duct work.  In this fashion, the house/building is used as the 'duct-work.' This prevents the loss of energy, and promotes more efficiency, by reducing the amounts of restriction to air flow that duct work initiates.

Solar Chill Evaporative Coolers

Make one of your largest electrical loads one of your smallest!
(Recommended for drier climates. Works when humidity <40%)

Features
* Cut your cooling costs by up to 90%
* Low wattage cooling: from 20 to 85 watts
* This cooler runs on 1 or 2 solar panels, or a 12VDC power supply
* The perfect cooling solution for buildings powered by solar, wind or hydro power
* Short payback period
* More environmentally friendly - no freon
* Stainless Steel- Long life, low maintenance

How it Works:
Where humidity is low, Cool 110°F air to 75°F by evaporating water. Nearly 18,000 BTUs of cooling is gained for each gallon of water evaporated. Evaporation rates in the Solar Chill™ can range from 1 to 7 gallons per hour. The extremely low wattage allows the solar chill to operate well on just one or two solar PV panels. This lowers the payback period for a Solar Chill™ system to about 3 to 5 years. Though we recommend powering the Solar Chill™ with PV's, they can also be run on 115 VAC Adapters, or even a car battery charger!

The Solar Chill™ uses an 6" thick, wetted CelDek™ pad, and is efficient for both airflow and evaporation. The Celdek costs $20 per cubic foot. The large cooler pad costs $75 (included with purchase) and should last for 5 years with proper maintenance.

Highly efficient DC motors, usually with permanent magnets replace the inefficient AC induction motor. Propeller fans are used to move the air in the Solar Chill™ instead of the traditional squirrel cage type blower (which require higher wattage's).

Minimal duct work is recommended with a Solar Chill™ to obtain maximum efficiency with lower wattage's. All of our models can optionally be made into down draft models for roof installation, with the addition of a 90 degree elbow. Local sheet metal shops can easily and inexpensively make one of these out of 24 or 26 gauge galvanized steel.

Why Solar Cooling?
Solar power and cooling go together like bread and butter. They are a perfect match. The more intense the sun shines, the more cooling energy is available. And if you have "time of day metering" higher electrical rates during the daytime (peak), and lower rates at night, you will have even more opportunities to save on your utility bills.

Control Packages
Hard water with high mineral content can produce a mineral build up on critical components of the cooler, reducing efficiency and shortening the units useful lifespan. This is best dealt with by using a clean out pump. When operated for 5 minutes per day, about 3 to 5 gallons of water is pumped out of the cooler, A clean out pump comes with both the 12V and 24V control packages. These control packages include a pump, timer, and a thermostat.

Notes:
Use 3 CFM per Square foot of cooling space Work when humidity <40%
UPS shipped except the 24", 30", and dual fan models ship truck freight.
The 2412 is the best choice if you are using ductwork. You may run these from 115v with a $99 adapter.
48 volt models are available: add $90.
These operate best from battery, but perform directly from PV panels on a tracker, and will work well in the midday direct from fixed PV panels.
